Are you ready for summer? Do you dread swimwear shopping, like so many plus size women do? Are you stuck on what you think is “flattering” to you? Or are you of the thinking that the easiest way to get a bikini body is to simply put a bikini on your body? Regardless of your past struggles with swimwear shopping, we wanted to make it easier! Here is a list of 7 of our best tips for successful swimwear shopping as a plus size gal!
1. Try On Different Styles
Even if you have pre-conceived notions about what type of swimsuit looks good on you or “flatters” you, we highly recommend trying a variety of different styles! Sometimes we don’t know what we like until we put it on our bodies. Clothing tends to look completely different on a hanger or a model on the internet than it does on real bodies. And the only way you will know if you like it on your body, is to try it on! So pick a bunch of different styles- one pieces, two pieces, cheeky bottoms, high cut, all the options! And see what you feel comfortable in, it may surprise you!
2. Adjustable Is Where It’s At!!
We know all bodies are not the same. Whether that’s shape, length, curves- you name it, and no two people look alike. Especially when it comes to plus size bodies, we are very individualized. Your swimsuit should be too! Whether it’s adjustable straps or the ability to tie bottoms, look for options that will give you that adjustable factor to be able to fully customize your suit to your body.
3. Look At Fabrics
All swimsuit fabrics are not created equal. Some are created specifically with tummy control or support in mind. Some, especially on the cheaper end, are made from polyester and are going to give you less stretch and comfortability. Swimsuits aren’t typically something we look for in different fabrics because we think it’s all made from swim-appropriate fabric, but there are differences to keep in mind!
4. Mix it Up!
In the past, we’ve seen a lot of matchy-matchy swimwear, where either the top and bottom are the exact shade or pattern. But it is a huge trend to mix and match your swimwear! Pair a colorful top with black or plain bottoms to draw more attention to your bust. This can also work in the reverse- choose a neutral top with a bright bottom to bring some attention to your booty or your hips.
5. Consider Your Activities
Are you typically someone who lounges on a towel on the beach? Or are you more of a play volleyball and run into the water type of person? It’s pretty common for people to just look for what they think looks good on them rather than considering what activities they’ll actually be doing. If you are more athletic or into swimming, you may want to consider something that holds your bust in securely and has some stretch. That way, you won’t have to worry about things moving and shifting around in a way you don’t want it to. In the same way, if you just like to tan on the beach, you may have many more options and select something that is easier to move around to prevent harsh tan lines.
6. Cutouts!
One of our favorite styles for plus size folks who want more coverage but don’t want to be completely covered is to find a suit with some really well-placed cutouts. Swimsuits like this, while majorly cute and trendy, can make you feel like you’re showing just enough skin without making the full commitment of a bikini. It’s also a good way to start trying out different styles without being too far from your comfort zone if you’re used to only wearing a one-piece.
7. Pick A Classic Suit
Are you worried about investing in a quality swimsuit and the style not being trendy next year? We can totally relate! A good swimsuit can be expensive and you should be able to wear it for as long as you want. Our suggestion would be to pick something without a print or anything fancy. A suit in a solid color with not a lot of details will never go out of style.
We hope this list was helpful and makes this swimwear shopping season a little less stressful!
